Scrape.Improv is the output of the machine learning model StyleGAN, trained on
7,523 scraped images of exhibitions selected and hosted by a popular
contemporary art blog between January and September 2020. The visuals are
accompanied by a narrated text which was manually reassembled from the
exhibition titles of the same set of images. Utilising online resources such as
freelance marketplaces, file sharing sites and cloud storage, each element of the
film was worked on and edited remotely over the remaining part of the year.
The film follows a process utilised in previous Das Balloon works of intensely
collecting, then reforming variations of the same source material together,
simultaneously confusing and distilling an idea. The resulting works tread the line of
a visual ambiguity which often belies the conceptual structure underpinning them.
Das Balloon (Tom and James Jarrett (b. 1987) and Andy Venner (b.1985)) is an
artist trio since 2013, based in Worthing and Hastings, UK
