March 14. Began to lay the foundation for my castle of philosophy (not to be confounded with my inner or inmost Castle of Beauty). Life is pathetic futile save for the development of the soul memories passionate memories are the utmost gold; simplicity is strengthening and faith is essential.

to read four chapters of the Bible every day
to read a book every week
to continue rites but to abolish superstitions
to be inextravagant in everything except as regards books
and gifts for C
to be bright and delicate and gentle and chaste
